TÜV SÜD acquires SustainCERT to expand digital carbon verification

TÜV SÜD has acquired SustainCERT, a Luxembourg-based validation and verification body specialising in carbon markets and digital measurement, reporting and verification (dMRV), to expand its digital carbon verification capabilities and strengthen its position in global carbon markets.

SustainCERT brings accredited verification capabilities and a digital verification platform that uses extensive data and artificial intelligence to deliver faster, more accurate and scalable verification across compliance and voluntary carbon markets. As part of a digital MRV pilot programme run by standard setter Verra, SustainCERT carried out the fully digital audit behind the first carbon certificates approved for high-frequency issuance, such as monthly or bi-monthly.

The company developed early verification rules for value chain interventions alongside a carbon management platform that allows companies to verify, manage, allocate and report emissions reductions across Scope 3 value chains, and founded the Value Change Initiative, a forum of more than 120 companies, NGOs and standard setters producing guidance on Scope 3 accounting and value chain decarbonisation.

Carbon markets are expanding as governments and businesses pursue decarbonisation targets through regulated and voluntary mechanisms, while concerns over the transparency and credibility of carbon credits have driven demand for robust independent verification. TÜV SÜD will combine SustainCERT’s capabilities with its own assurance and certification expertise within its newly established Sustainability Business Unit, which brings together the group’s environmental and climate protection activities across the value chain.
