Terraton, a full-stack biochar platform, has raised USD 11.5mn for its seed round to catalyze the development and deployment of its end-to-end platform that combines financing, equipment, software and access to buyers to get biochar facilities up and running.
The company will focus its expansion on emerging markets and so far has two facilities, Three Mountains Cocoa in Ghana and EcoFix Kenya—the former has received preliminary approval from Puro.earth and the latter is under review with Isometric. Both facilities are expected to remove over 20,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually, while at the same time improving soil health and bringing high-demand, high-integrity biochar carbon credits to the market.
Biochar accounts for the majority of carbon removal credits delivered to date and last year enabled over 250,000 tonnes of carbon removal.
The round was co-led by Lowercarbon Capital and Gigascale Capital. Other strategic investors were ANA Future Frontier Fund, TAKANAWA GATEWAY Global Co-Benefits Fund, and several angel investors.
